The petition written by a group, the Save Abia
Initiative for Change to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, calling for the investigation of ex-governor Theodore Orji over
alleged financial scam, has sparked off mixed reactions in the state.
SAIC had allegedly petitioned the anti-graft agency demanding the immediate probe of Orji, his wife and son for allegedly squandering N474bn while in office.
Orji, who is the immediate past Abia State governor, is the incumbent Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District at the senate.
While the media report about the said petition
dominated public discussion in Umuahia, the
state capital, since Thursday with some residents
discussing the matter with curiosity, some socio-
cultural associations have criticised SAIC for calling for the head of the ex-governor.
Ibeku Youths Assembly, a group of Orji’s kinsmen,
have warned against any move to “tarnish the
image” of their illustrious son.
The group accused the ex-governor Orji UzorKalu
of masterminding the “purported petitions using a
faceless group to smear the image and rubbish the good works of Orji, whom he sees as a political enemy that must be destroyed at all cost.” IYC Chairman, ChijiokeKalu, and Secretary, David
Uguru, in a press statement issued in Umuahia, vowed to resist any move to “rubbish Orji”.
Similarly, a group representing Kalu’s kinsmen,
the All Igbere Consultative Forum, has warned
Kalu against “his sustained but unwarranted
attacks against Orji.”
Chairman of the forum, Dr.EmeChimezieAgbai;
and the Secretary, KaluDonatus, in a press’s release, challenged signatories of the said petition
to make their identities public “If they are to be taken seriously”.
Another group, the Alliance for Grassroots
Integration Project, has condemned the call to
probe Orji saying it is unnecessary distraction.
