People around Bonny street, Umuahia-Abia state
are still in shock and lack the right word to express the tragedy that struck at 12 Bonny Street, as a 25 year-old man, Tochukwu Ogbonna,
alias Mbe (meaning tortoise), set himself and the family house ablaze.
Reports say he had attacked his mother with a
machete, inflicting severe injuries on her.
The woman is said to be lying critically ill at the
Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.
Trouble started when the young man was said to
have approached his mother on an undisclosed
issue.
He was said to have also attacked their domestic
dogs, which he cut into pieces.
Police were called in to arrest the deceased, but
he was said to have escaped, set their house
ablaze and threw himself into the fire.
Some residents of the area said he was a drunk,
others said he was a drug addict, while others
described him as suffering a mental problem.
In a reaction, the state Police Public Relations
Officer, Onyeke Udeviotu stated that his men are
investigating the matter, to unravel the mystery
behind the incident.
The PPRO advised youths to desist from the use
of hard drugs, which he described as highly
destructive.
